7 Signs Your Air Ducts May Need Cleaning
Some dust in a duct is normal. These signs are the ones worth following up on, along with a few that don't necessarily mean anything.

Signs worth checking
- Buildup you can see. Take off a vent cover and shine a flashlight into the register box. Thick dust or debris is a clear reason to look further.
- Dust blowing from vents. Particles coming out when the system starts are a stronger sign than general household dust.
- A recent remodel. Drywall dust and sawdust get into the system easily.
- Signs of pests. Droppings or nesting material need attention. Deal with the pests first.
- Visible growth. If you suspect mold, don't start with cleaning. Have it assessed and find the moisture source.
- Unknown history. If you've just bought a home, an inspection gives you a starting point.
- Weak airflow. This may mean a blocked, crushed or disconnected duct rather than dust.
What doesn't prove much
A dusty TV stand or a gray filter doesn't tell you your ducts are dirty. Filters are supposed to catch dust, and most household dust comes from everyday living. The EPA also says duct cleaning hasn't been proven to prevent health problems, so be careful with any company that promises it will.
What to do next
Replace the filter, look inside a couple of registers and take photos. If you still see buildup, book an inspection or call us with what you found.
