How Salt Air Affects Vents in South Bay Beach Homes
Beach living is hard on metal. Salt, fog and sand don't usually cause trouble overnight, but they can slowly wear down the parts of your vent system that face the outside.

Where to look first
- Outside dryer hoods. A flap that's stuck or a damaged cover can trap lint.
- Screws and straps. Corroded fasteners may let parts come loose.
- Roof terminations. They get full exposure, and you rarely see them.
- Floor registers. Sand tends to collect in these if you live close to the beach.
Damp air and ducts
Coastal humidity by itself doesn't mean you have a duct problem, but a damp attic or crawl space should be looked at. If you notice musty smells, find the moisture source first. Suspected mold should be assessed by a qualified specialist.
Simple upkeep
- Twice a year, check that the outside flap opens freely when the dryer runs.
- Rinse or wipe salt off exterior covers you can safely reach.
- Keep sand out by using doormats and vacuuming around floor vents.
- Change filters on schedule, and sooner if windows stay open.
