How Often Should You Clean Your Air Ducts?
You may have heard every three to five years. That can be a handy reminder to check, but it isn't a rule. The better question is what's in your ducts right now.

Why condition beats the calendar
The EPA recommends cleaning when there's a specific reason, such as substantial visible buildup, pests or debris blowing from the vents. A well-sealed system with good filters can stay clean for a long time, while a remodel can make a system dirty in a few weeks.
Things that can shorten the gap
- Renovation or construction work
- Pets that shed
- A loose or low-quality filter
- Leaks in return ducts in attics or crawl spaces
- Windows left open near sand, roads or construction
A simple yearly check
- Replace the filter and check that it fits snugly.
- Remove two or three vent covers and look inside with a flashlight.
- Walk around the home and compare airflow at the vents.
- Take photos so you can compare them next year.
